Das Home-Label Ouzel Records aus der Gegend von La Spezia (Italien) feiert sein zweijähriges Bestehen mit einem 17 Stücke umfassenden CD-Sampler, der beweist, dass das, was man Independent-Pop zu nennen pflegte, nicht tot ist; es riecht nicht mal komisch. Im Gegenteil: die hier versammelten Songs - denn die meisten sind Songs; rein elektronische Tracks sind hier in der Minderzahl - sind ausnahmslos echte Songwriter-Perlen: intensiv, zumeist melancholisch, aber niemals pathetisch oder larmoyant.
Man kann Labelbetreiber Mauro, der auch mit seinem eigenen Projekt The Colours Seen From Behind einen Song beisteuert, nur gratulieren - dazu, dass er für diese Compilation so viele herausragende Beiträge bekommen hat, und zu deren gelungener Anordnung. Aufgrund der durchweg beeindruckenden Qualität fände ich einzelne Anspieltipps geradezu unfair und sage deshalb nur: Ich finde es klasse, dass diese Musik, die dem gängigen Klischee von Party-/"Spaß"-Musik (ein Freund von mir benutzt immer den sarkastischen Begriff "Happy-Life-Musik") so wenig entsprechen will, unter der Überschrift "Those who joined the birthday party" aufgeführt wird. In Zeiten, in denen einem noch eine 60-Stunden-Arbeitswoche ohne Sozialleistungen mit dem Hinweis auf "Spaß" verkauft werden soll ("Work hard. Have fun. Make history."), sind solche Statements ja mal bitter nötig. Deshalb kann man Ouzel Records für diese Stunde Musik, die ich mir wahrscheinlich an meinem eigenen Geburtstag auch anhören werde, nur danken. (Und was uns Spaß macht, entscheiden wir selber!)

Ouzel Records, a home label based near La Spezia, Italy, celebrates its second anniversary by releasing a 17-track sampler. The CD proves that the entity that used to be called independent pop is not dead; in fact, it doesn't even smell funny. On the contrary, all of the songs featured here (I say 'songs' deliberately because there's only a few purely electronic tracks on the CD) are real songwriting gems: intense, melancholic, but never pathetic or self-pitying.
One can only congratulate Mauro, who runs Ouzel Records and also contributed a song by his own project The Colours Seen From Behind , for having received so many outstanding contributions and for arranging them so skilfully. As the material is of such impressive quality throughout, I feel it would be downright unfair to recommend any particular track. All I want to say is: I think it's great that this music, which so obviously defies the clichéd notion of what party/'fun' music should sound like (a friend of mine always uses the sarcastic term "happy life music"), is placed under the heading "Those who joined the birthday party". Statements like this are bitterly needed in times when even a 60-hour working week with no social security is advertised in terms of 'fun' ('Work hard. Have fun. Make history.'). One can only say thank you to Ouzel Records for this hour of music which I'm very likely to be listening to on my own birthday. (And we'll decide for ourselves what's fun and what's not!)
