Onq: Ballads About Unlucky Love Stories (MC, Ouzel Records, ouz007)
Wer Leonard Cohen schon 'depressiv' findet, wird dieses Tape wahrscheinlich nicht mögen. Das Zusammenspiel von hypnotisch-monotonen Akustikgitarren-Figuren und Gesang erinnert mich hier sehr an dessen Songs of Love and Hate oder bestimmte Stücke von der Live Songs-Platte. Sollte Onq hier eine Hommage intendiert haben, dann ist sie ihm gelungen. Wenn ich nochmal eine Referenz nennen müsste, an die mich das erinnert, würde ich ja John Cale sagen. Aber nachdem man sich auf dessen bestuhlten Konzerten (München, Muffathalle, 08.09.2000) ja mittlerweile von irgendwelchen Managertypen - jeder kriegt das Publikum, das er verdient, heißt es - sagen lassen muss, man solle gefälligst still sein, wäre das eher beleidigend, deshalb sag ich's nicht.
Daher wäre es besser, Onq ginge mal auf Tour. Da würde ich dann sowieso nichts sagen, weil einem seine Musik mit ihrer unspektakulären Beschwörung von Sehnsucht und Verzweiflung durchaus den Atem verschlagen kann. Musik für die Abenddämmerung.

People who find Leonard Cohen's music 'depressing' are quite likely to hate this tape. The interplay of hypnotically monotonous acoustic guitar figures and the voice on this tape reminds me very much of Cohen's Songs of Love and Hate or certain songs from the Live Songs album. If Onq intended a tribute to Cohen, he certainly succeeded. Asked to quote another reference to describe this music, I'd mention John Cale. But I won't do it as this would be rather insulting, given the fact that at a (seated) John Cale concert (Munich, Muffathalle, 08/09/00) you now meet manager-type squares who tell you to be quiet - they say everybody gets the audience they deserve...
That's why it would be better if Onq went out on tour. There would be no need to talk then, because his music can definitely take one's breath away with its unspectacular evocation of desire and desperation. File under: Dusk music.
